Mark Zuckerberg is an American technology entrepreneur, programmer, and business executive best known as the co-founder of Facebook, now part of Meta Platforms.
He was born on May 14, 1984, in White Plains, New York, and grew up in Dobbs Ferry. From a young age, Zuckerberg showed a strong interest in computers and programming. While still in school, he created several software projects and communication tools.
In 2002, Zuckerberg entered Harvard University, where he studied psychology and computer science. In February 2004, he launched “TheFacebook” with several fellow students, including Eduardo Saverin, Dustin Moskovitz, Chris Hughes, and Andrew McCollum. The platform initially served Harvard students before expanding to other universities and eventually to the general public.
Facebook grew rapidly and became one of the world’s largest social media platforms. Zuckerberg left Harvard before graduating to focus full-time on the company. Over the following years, Facebook expanded internationally and acquired major platforms such as Instagram and WhatsApp.
In 2012, Facebook became a publicly traded company through one of the largest technology IPOs at the time. Zuckerberg remained the company’s chief executive and a major shareholder.
In October 2021, Facebook Inc. changed its corporate name to Meta Platforms, reflecting Zuckerberg’s broader vision for virtual reality, augmented reality, artificial intelligence, and what he described as the “metaverse.” Meta has since invested heavily in AI infrastructure, digital advertising, smart glasses, and immersive computing.
Zuckerberg is also known for philanthropy. Together with his wife, Priscilla Chan, he founded the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative, which supports projects in science, education, healthcare, and technology.
Throughout his career, Zuckerberg has also faced significant criticism and regulatory scrutiny over privacy, misinformation, data protection, competition, and the social impact of Meta’s platforms.
Today, he remains one of the most influential figures in the global technology industry and continues to lead Meta as it develops products across social media, artificial intelligence, and next-generation computing.
